Seeing as this post as been about training dogs not only in obedience but scent detection as well, I found this meme that made me giggle. Timber has continued to train in her explosive detection program and just the other day we were doing a drive building session when one of the viewers called her a savage. We had two dogs out as they were competing for the towel that had the odor of smokeless gunpowder on it and she would not stop driving her legs trying to get to it. When is was her turn to be released to get the towel, she took off with an extreme amount of speed and bit that towel just like a police K9 apprehending the suspect. At that moment, the comment came out that she was a savage and we all started laughing.
What makes this meme link to Timber and her training is that she is a pure breed American Labrador and they are not known for sinking their teeth into something so aggressively. Memes like this put humor into a somewhat serious event if a dog were to give someone a tooth hug as it is extremely painful, and the dogs mouth carries bacteria that can cause infections. During that drive session Timber was doing exactly what we have been working towards but no she would never bite a person. Something like this in a lab would be more for waterfowl hunting or some type of bird retrieval.
One other thing that this meme brings to my mind is videos from TikTok. Usually it is done with the police K9s and there is a person that constantly ask if they can pet that dog in which the handler always responds no. If it were me, I would tell them if the want a tooth hug it is at their own risk. All joking aside, working dogs are trained by professionals and handled by professionals in which citizens really just need to be aware that they are animals capable of making decisions on their own regardless of the commands from the handler.
