Introduction

Have you been waiting to find an easy way to start basic obedience for your canine? Hi, my name is Brandon Wheaton and I am currently working as an apprentice at canine training facility. I served approximately seven years in the US Army before being medically discharged with severe PTSD. After struggling with reintegration, I met another veteran who runs a non-profit organization that provides PTSD service dogs for veterans. While working with him and my service dog, I became hooked and began working with these fascinating creatures. I also assisting in training different breeds of service dogs that include Belgian Malinois and Labs.

This blog will be an inside look at the training I am doing with my 4-month-old female black lab. This process starts with my co-workers and me introducing new things to the dog including basic obedience and scent detection. The end goal is for her to have strong obedience and be able to start an advanced level of scent detection. I realize that not everyone is going to be training their dog for the scent detection, but I hope that this blog will provide insight on how to handle certain situations as well as introducing new commands. Each week’s topic will vary depending on where she is progressing or what skills might need more time to develop before moving on.

In conclusion, I want to remind readers that I am an apprentice and am not claiming to be an expert at dog training. Before posting my weekly information, I will be consulting with the two gentlemen that I work under who are experts at dog training and run a professional dog training business. My hope is that throughout the training of my dog, I can provide insight and helpful information for those who want to tackle training their dog. I am looking forward to sharing this journey with everyone.
